Where to Eat in Antigua, Part 1: My Top 10 Favorite Spots

One of my favorite things to do is discover new restaurants in Antigua. This city is the culinary capital of Guatemala, and there are so many amazing places to eat. I've been through the trial and error search so you don't have to.

For Part 1 of our dining, and maybe some wining, guide, I'm sharing 10 of my favorite local spots. From the classic Guatemalan hangover cures, the Picositas, to high-end culinary fusion, these environments offer the service, atmosphere, and above all else, flavor.

Luna de Miel

Vibe: Sweet Cravings & Casual Comfort. If your body is asking for sugar after hiking a volcano, this is the safest bet in town. Luna de Miel is an Antigua institution famous for their massive, perfectly folded crepes. It's laid-back, consistently good, and undeniably comforting.

Samsara

Vibe: Ayurvedic Wellness & With a Dash of Mysticism. Since 2014, Samsara has been Antigua's definitive sanctuary for functional, plant-based nutrition. Inspired by Ayurvedic philosophy, their menu acts as a deliberate reset button for tired travelers. From their on-tap kombucha and house-made ferments (like kimchi and tempeh) to healing, spiced bowls of kitchary, every ingredient is chosen to restore your energy and balance your system. It is the ultimate spot to nourish your body cleanly and intentionally after days of heavy travel. This restuarant is one of my favorites spots.

Hugo's

Vibe: Ceviche & The Legendary 'Picosita'. This is your crash course in local street-level culture. Hugo's is famous for seafood and micheladas, but you are here for the Picosita. They are the pioneers of this drink. What is a Picosita? It is a quintessential Guatemalan lifesaver—usually an ice-cold local beer served right in the can, dressed heavily with lime, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and topped with fresh ceviche juices and spices. It is the ultimate afternoon refresher or hangover cure.
